Project Explanation, Notes, and Thoughts
When we launched this podcast here in Central Illinois, we were one of the pioneers in the medium. There weren’t many people to lean on, so much of this project was just educating ourselves on how to accomplish this with the level of quality that we have come to expect.
After about 6 months of research in the audio recording and podcast publishing industry, we were confident that we could successfully complete the project. It almost felt like 3 different project…the podcast recording itself, the episide editing, and then the podcast channel creation with all of the graphic design necessary. Then there was some work to do to sync the three together.
We love tacking new projects like this because now we have the knowledge to handle it again much more efficiently and with much more confidence.
What did we learn on the marketing side?
People who will listen to podcast episodes that sometimes exceed an hour are good clients. And they value educational information.
People find episodes and listen to your podcast on their own schedule. Many people listen as soon as the espisode is released…but its very common for
What did we learn along the way on the tech side?
Spend the extra money on professional microphones…it takes your production to the next level.
Have plenty batteries 🙂 External audio recorders die fast.
Wireless mics are great for individual podcasters but create tiny delays that can be annoying when you have several podcast guests.
One boom mic to record the entire conversation sounds great in theory…until you realize people speak in different volumes.
People move a lot…stationary mics for each guest can still end up with different volumes.
For both of last two reasons…record each person individually on a seperate audio channel.
Always have two recording styles rolling at some time. Something always goes wrong and it is essential to have a backup audio option…even if you only have to use a tiny portion of it.
High quality lavalier mics are amazing. They create nice uniform tone and volume and move with people, but…
Audio tape is your friend. Secure the lav mic more than you think you should, and cover with tape.
What did we learn along the way on the content side?
Just like any other content, if you don’s schedule it and put it in your calendar, it does’t happen. Despite everyones good intentions, you don’t just drift into the podcast room to record something.
Launching a series within the podcast channel is a good way to come up with scheduled content.
